In a recent interview on Channels Television, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and key figure in the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, made a bold statement about his vision for northern Nigeria. Speaking with confidence and clarity, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that if elected president in 2027, the northern region would have every reason to celebrate his leadership.
Obi described the 19 northern states as Nigeria’s greatest yet most underutilised asset, pointing to the region’s vast arable lands, rich human capital, and decisive voter strength. He expressed concern that insecurity and poor governance have long stifled the region’s potential.
“We have voted for incompetence, tribe, and religion,” Obi remarked. “It’s time we vote for competence.”
He pledged to tackle the persistent security challenges plaguing the north, stressing that meaningful development cannot happen without peace. “The criminality we face in the North today, I will deal with it,” he said. “If I am president, the North will celebrate me. I have an idea of the problem.”
Obi’s remarks come at a time when national conversations around unity, security, and economic development are intensifying. His position underscores his continued push for a leadership model based on merit, strategic thinking, and inclusive governance—qualities he believes can unlock the full potential of the region and the country at large.
As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, Obi’s comments are expected to shape political discourse, especially among voters seeking a new direction for the nation.
